From my artefact series. This one based on a gaming controller, the series explores the vision of our culture into the distant future, recreated as geodes.
Concrete, controller, crystals.

Hello, friends! Please join me for another episode of “cool tricks in Blender make awesome dice,” featuring excessive amounts of both sparkle and math!
Tumblr media
As previously mentioned, my particular dicemaking niche is Stuff In Dice because I have a very fancy printer and absolutely no restraint, and some time back I was looking at gemstone dice and I thought “you know, geodes would be SUPER COOL.” And because no restraint, I immediately set about figuring out how exactly to do that.
The first step was my trusty Blender, where I used a geometric plugin to procedurally generate a field of fractal quartz crystals with a random number seed, which looked a little like this:
Tumblr media
Then I imported my blank masters, which are my dice except without numbers and 1mm smaller, and used a boolean intersect on that fractal quartz field to create this:
Tumblr media
Dice on the bottom, crystals on top!
Sending these things to the printer is always interesting because supports are VERY EXCITING, but these inserts turned out AWESOME. My intention was to print several sets to use, rather than prep and mold a set for casting masters, because the sharp points and indents of the generated quartz will be a MESS in silicone.
Tumblr media
The awesome thing about printing as needed is that I could use some really cool painting techniques that wouldn’t work in a cast. For this test set, I painted the geode shapes matte black, and then used a nail art technique to polish the crystal tops with a shimmery metallic multichrome greeny-gold dry pigment, for extra sparkle and a cool color-shifting look on the crystals.
Tumblr media
SO. SPARKLY.
In order to cast these in dice, I soaked them in resin first and made sure to toothpick all the little crevices to avoid air pockets. Then I filled the molds halfway like I would with any insert, slipped in the geode shapes (the 8 and the 10s are always the worst to fit), and voila:
Tumblr media
CRYSTAL MAGIC.
I plan to ink these in a bright spring green, which, with how crystal-clear the top halves are, will make the quartz inside look like soft fuzzy sparkly moss.

16 16 26?
16. (x2) They say you can tell a lot about a person from the state of their desk… Do you have a desk? Can you describe it?
I know the second one is probably a typo but I have 2 desks so I'll describe both lol
Two monitors on risers. A laptop. A tangle of cables. A collection of old & recent knicknacks: ponies, aperture science turrets, a wooloo in a pokeball, the shadowkeep CE box, lucky cats, a completed daruma, a laser cut keychain of Charlie, an Apollo moon landing commemorative pin. Someone's handmade geode mug filled with pens, pencils and cutting instruments, a single crochet hook, and two small pride flags; a green tiled turkish lamp; a stack of books; a desk mat depicting an eclipse in a dark forest scene; a keyboard whose non-alphabetical keys have been replaced with various symbols.
A stack of books. A tin box full of paper crafting & letter-writing materials. Unmounted rubber stamps. An "Ohio" mug. A coaster visualizing the time between earth's formation through recorded human history as a map of the united states. A rechargeable electronics duster. A pen grip. A glasses case. Two candles. A stack of journals beneath a resin bird's skull. A small lamp with a vaguely Victorian print lampshade. A model depicting Misty of Chincoteague. A full pin board. Framed prints of my art. A framed art card of a witch. Two resin blocks encasing specimens of sea life.
26. What is your dream mode of transportation?
BULLET TRAIN NETWORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I could get to other ends of the coast within a few hours I would be basically unstoppable.

For the first time in a month and a half I’ve actually made art.
The left is found pieces with a vintage key.
The right is a rainbow druzy with oroborus style addition. Not sure if it needs anything else or is fine on its own.
I have two more druzy drops, one truer to the term like a broken geode, but not sure yet what I’m going to do minus knowing they won’t be put in resin.
